When Jim Powell, owner of Powell’s Furniture, sponsored a litter of puppies from Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS), he was able to witness the difference his business made in the lives of the rescues. They had arrived at ODHS covered in fleas (photo of one of the puppies with severe flea infestation) and underwent treatment and bathing regimens to kill the fleas. Businesses, companies and groups can sponsor a litter of puppies for $300.

Businesses, groups and organizations can attach their names to a great cause by sponsoring puppy litters from Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS). The $300 sponsorship is used to care for the new pups with examinations, vaccinations, flea and tick medication and more. The sponsoring business can name the litter of puppies and reap the benefits of gaining positive social media exposure, including on the ODHS Facebook page that has nearly 30,000 followers. The businesses can keep up to date about their puppy litters by joining the ODHS Alumni Facebook group, where adopters share photos and talk about the pups.

When Jim Powell, owner of Powell’s Furniture, in Fredericksburg, sponsored a litter of puppies, he was able to witness the difference his business made in the lives of the rescues. They had arrived at ODHS infested with fleas and had to undergo bathing and treatment regimens to remove the parasites. Because fleas feed on an animal’s blood, their saliva can cause severe allergies, anemia, itching, infections and diseases. Through Powell’s generous donation, the puppies went from having red skin (flea allergy dermatitis) and uncomfortable itching to canines with healthy, soft coats.

“I’ve been an animal lover my entire life,” said Powell. “In my opinion, way too many families acquire pets without realizing the commitment they have to make, and sometimes these poor animals suffer. Thank God for our rescues like ODHS.” The litter has been named “Powell’s Pups.”

Because Powell’s Furniture sponsored a litter of puppies from Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS), the donation helped to transform the pups, which arrived at the rescue with infested with fleas. One of the pups (in photo) in the “Powell’s Pups” litter is shown with a healthy, soft coat. Sponsorships help ODHS save more lives, and naming a litter of puppies gives businesses branding exposure on social media and more. For more information about the dogs available for adoption and adoption surveys, as well as sponsorships, upcoming events, volunteering, fostering and donating items, visit www.olddominionhumanesociety.org/sponsorship.

When Tales & Tails, an independent bookstore in Downtown Fredericksburg, sponsored pups, it dubbed the mother Jane Pawston and the pups F. Scott Furgerald, Nicholas Barks, George Arfwell and Sir Arthur Canine Doyle. The play on names using famous authors was a hit on the ODHS Facebook page, where the puppies’ pictures were displayed. Thousands of people were able to view and find out more about adopting the dogs, as well as information about Tales & Tails.

Tales & Tails is the perfect match for the sponsorship, as the bookstore combines its love for books, dogs and coffee into a space where all are welcome. The store is filled with information about favorite books, events, rescue pups and more.

“Sponsoring a litter of puppies is a great way to get a company’s brand involved in saving lives,” said Chrissy Hamilton, ODHS founder. “We’re so grateful to these businesses and their generosity in helping to support our rescue efforts. The community plays such an important role in helping to save rescue dogs’ lives.”

ODHS is a no-kill, volunteer-led, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that’s committed to saving and caring for dogs until they’re adopted by loving families. Not a government-funded rescue, it relies on donations to pay for vital items, such as dog food, veterinary care (including spay and neuter) and the many other expenses to provide the canines with a second chance at lives they deserve. Sponsorships help ODHS save more lives, and naming a litter of puppies gives businesses branding exposure.
