While they’ve watched hundreds of other rescue dogs get adopted, three canines at Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) have spent a total of 1,620 days waiting for the same chance. Crash, Ziggy and Butterscotch have been at the rescue facility or in foster homes each for more than a year, and the search to find them their own caring families continues. ODHS, a no-kill rescue, saves dogs from situations, such as neglect, hoarding and mistreatment, as well as taking canines from high-kill shelters and facilities with overcrowding. In its mission to find well-matched, permanent homes for animals in need, ODHS is working to place these three rescues in homes where they’ll thrive.
“At ODHS, the volunteers work with the rescues to make sure they’re socialized, get exercise and are cared for,” said Chrissy Blake, ODHS founder. “Our goal is to match the rescues with the best-possible adopters, and we want to find those families for our long-time residents. ODHS offers a Couchsurfing Program, where individuals can care for a rescue for a few days or a week at a time, and it’s a great way to get to know the dog before adopting.”
Crash, a compact, 15-pound rescue, arrived at ODHS on July 5, 2023. For 600 days he’s waited to be adopted. The shy boy takes time to warm up to others. He’s used to being around dogs and cats about his size, but he prefers being the “top dog” in his home. He takes time to feel comfortable, and he’s currently only at ease with his foster mom. Crash isn’t suitable for households with children and requires experienced owners, and he’s in need of a loving, patient adopter.
All the volunteers at ODHS know Ziggy, who’s been at the facility since July 15, 2023 (about 600 days), because the 15-pound, mixed breed’s personality is big. His best friend, Clancy, who he shared a kennel with, left him behind when he was adopted a few months ago. Now, Ziggy’s waiting for the same chance. His foster family says he loves belly rubs, cuddling, and playing fetch. He listens to commands, sleeps in his crate well and has good bathroom manners. He’s good with other dogs and respects the cats in the house. While he gets rave reviews in so many areas, Ziggy needs an adult-only home, and his future adopter should set strict boundaries. Ziggy needs to wear a tiny muzzle in public and with house guests, and he has no issues with it. He’s a favorite with volunteers, happily wagging his tail and standing up on two legs wanting to be pet. His foster family enjoys having him as part of the family, and he’s bonded well with them. Upon his arrival from work each day, the foster dad gets a very excited greeting from Ziggy, who expects belly rubs and plenty of cuddles.
Butterscotch is a remarkable rescue, who arrived at ODHS as a pregnant stray on January 10, 2024. She was the perfect mother to her 10 puppies, who were all adopted. A two-year-old, Butterscotch has spent most of her life at ODHS and with a foster family—about 420 days. Great with everyone--dogs, cats and kids—she’s described as fun-loving, energetic and always up for an adventure (hiking, running, playing fetch). Her foster family says she’s a loyal companion with a heart full of love to share. She’d thrive in an active household and would be the perfect companion for somebody who enjoys outdoor activities.
