Jump Into June With Old Dominion Humane Society’s Summer Camp, Adoption Events Around Town, Saturday Strolls, Sunday Hikes And More

They’re ready to play and cuddle, and the Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) rescues will be looking for their adopters during events in June. Whether it’s a leisurely Saturday Stroll or a brisk Sunday Hike or an adoption event around town, the rescue dogs are ready to meet and greet.
First through fifth graders will enjoy puppy cuddles and learn about animal rescue during the ODHS Junior Rescuers Summer Camp from June 1-5. Animal “superheroes” will save the day—one paw at a time—with hands-on rescue tasks, crafts, games and plenty of wet kisses from the puppies. The high-energy, weeklong session is filled with lessons about animal rescue and heartwarming interactions with the most adorable four-legged friends. The Summer Camp will be led by ODHS Founder Chrissy Hamilton, who began the nonprofit, no-kill rescue in 2013. Since its beginnings, more than 8,000 dogs have been rescued by ODHS. Join ODHS dogs on easy, weekly Saturday Strolls at 7:45 a.m. Meet volunteers at the facility, where they’ll pair a dog with participants and head in a caravan to a different spot each week. The strolls are on flat, simple paths with an indoor backup for wet or cold weather. Don’t miss the chance to get exercise, socialize with fellow dog lovers and give the pups a chance to explore.

Make Sunday Hikes a weekly tradition--hike three-to-five miles paired with a furry buddy and enjoy the fresh air. Meet at ODHS at 7:45 a.m., and volunteers will match participants with rescue dogs. Then, the group will caravan to one of the many beautiful trails in Fredericksburg.

Meet the next member of the family, whether it’s a cuddly puppy, a hiking buddy or a couch potato, at Dog Krazy Downtown FXBG from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check out the rescues, shop for dog toys and treats and choose a dog to spoil for the rest of its life.

While browsing through a wide selection of books, stop by to see the cutest faces around. The ODHS rescue dogs will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All the dogs will be available for adoption, so pick that loyal reading companion to start the next chapter of life.

Grab a pint and get to know a new best friend at Laudenbach Brewing’s Pups & Pints adoption event from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each drink helps support the rescue dogs. Ten percent of the day’s proceeds will be donated to ODHS for medical care, vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter, food and bedding for the canines. Not looking to add a dog to the family yet? ODHS will be collecting donations, as well as providing information about fostering and volunteering.
