Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) will feature adoptable rescue dogs at the Fredericksburg Dog Mart from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. The historic dog’s day out and funfilled family event is hosted by the Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America’s grounds at 12400 Herndon Road in Spotsylvania. Admission is free, and parking costs $5.
Adorable puppies and rescues from ODHS will meet and greet the public. All ODHS rescues are examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, microchipped and cared for by the nonprofit organization’s foster families and volunteers until they’re matched with their forever families.
The Fredericksburg Dog Mart will feature a dog show, a raffle/auction, an adoption showcase, food and beverages and more.
“The Fredericksburg Dog Mart is a great event for ODHS to bring the rescues to meet the public,” said Chrissy Blake, ODHS founder. “It’s an opportunity to get the dogs outside in the fresh air and socialize. It’s even better when our rescues make a connection with families and are adopted. ODHS is happy to participate in this event, which is made possible by such a respected organization.”
Celebrating its 326th year, Fredericksburg Dog Mart is proclaimed America’s oldest dog event. It was first created in 1698 to promote trade between the Pamunkey Indians and the settlers of what is now known as Fredericksburg. The Indians traded produce and furs for hunting dogs raised by the settlers.
