While Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) has found adopters for more than 10,000 rescue dogs since 2013, four dogs have lingered at the facility for nearly 70 months. For about six years, by no fault of their own, these dogs have watched their “friends” go to forever families time and again. Some of the dogs are adopted within a couple of weeks, and still the long-term residents wait for their turns.

It’s been two years since Francis--or “Fancy Pants Francis,” as he’s nicknamed—arrived at ODHS. The eight year old has marked his time in a kennel in the facility or with fosters. Yet, Francis possesses all the traits adopters would want in a dog. A gentleman, he’s laid back, great with dogs and cats, independent and a snuggler.

With the perfect mix of playfulness and an easygoing nature, Francis has lots of personality and love to give. This charming boy will bring companionship and a few silly zoomies to his family’s life. Sunflower’s sweet and gentle nature makes her a loyal companion, and she’s been waiting for her family since she entered ODHS on May 7, 2025.

Sixteen months is a long time to wait for her adopter, but Sunflower holds out hope that somebody will cherish her affectionate nature and sweetness. She only wants to be loved, and repayment will be a loyal companion. She likes kids and cats and would do great with another dog in the home.

An active girl, who walks beautifully on a leash and loves a game of fetch, she enjoys staying by her human’s side. Sunflower loves people and is eager to find “her person,” who she’ll give her whole heart to.

Hattie, who’s great with kids and dogs, won the volunteers’ hearts since she arrived at ODHS on May 24, 2025.

Hattie’s been at ODHS for one and a half years, and she’s great with the volunteers and her fosters. Lively and affectionate, she’s good with dogs and kids. She loves running and exploring the outdoors, playing with her toys and romping with other dogs. Crate trained with excellent potty manners, Hattie will come to her new home as a pro.

After playing and exercising, Hattie likes nothing better than snuggling and cuddling on the couch with her humans.

More than a year ago, Priya came to ODHS as a scared girl who hid underneath everything or jumped onto a shelf where she’d burrow in the towels. In spite of her background of neglect, she’s thrived with her foster family and is sweet and gentle. She’s good with other dogs and had a best friend named Ducky who came from the same neglect case.

At ODHS, the two rescue dogs shared a kennel and curled up together until Ducky was adopted several months ago. Priya, who’s waiting for her forever family, enjoys exploring the outdoors, walks well on a leash and is crate trained.
