In memory of Paris, a shy and frightened dog that was rescued by Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS), the organization is hosting its Fourth Annual Paris Memorial Martingale Collar Drive, January 30. ODHS recognizes Paris each year with a martingale drive on the anniversary of her death to bring awareness of the importance of protecting dogs by the simple act of choosing this type of collar. Known as a limited-slip collar, it’s designed for dogs with narrow heads, such as Greyhounds and Whippets, as well as any breed who is adept at slipping out of their collar and fearful dogs while out on a walk. For fearful and anxious dogs like Paris, martingale collars are a must-have.
“Normal, flat collars are very dangerous when it comes to rescued or shy dogs,” said Chrissy Blake, ODHS founder. “They make it very easy for a dog to ‘pop’ its collar. When Paris was adopted and didn’t really know her new owners yet, she ‘popped’ her collar and was tragically hit by a car and died. After that, ODHS has required all of its rescue dogs to wear martingale collars.”
The martingale consists of a length of material with a metal ring at each end. A separate loop of material passes through the two rings, and a leash attaches to a ring on the loop. When a dog tries to back out of the martingale, the collar tightens around its neck. If the collar is properly adjusted, it will tighten to the size of the dog’s neck without the fear of choking. According to the Humane Society of the United States, the martingale is the most humane collar option for dogs that may slip out of their collars.
Throughout the month of January, ODHS is asking the community to help with donations of martingale collars. They can be found in the training section of most major retailers, such as Petco and PetSmart. The collars can be dropped off at the facility during adoption events or at the door when it’s closed. With these donations, the community will help keep every rescue dog safe from a tragic ending like that of Paris.
The public is welcome to drop off martingale donations any time at the door or during adoption hours.
