Donations Needed To Continue Rescue’s Work To Help Reduce Unwanted Pet Population

Thirty dogs have been spayed/neutered since Old Dominion Humane Society (ODHS) introduced its ‘Spay It Forward’ initiative a few months ago. Working with dog owners in the community facing financial challenges, the rescue has helped manage the pet population with surgeries that are accessible to the public. Jump-started with a $3,000 grant by the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies (VFHS), ODHS is helping to provide the services to Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Caroline counties.

At a cost of $185 for spay/neuter services per pet, ODHS has received 13 more approved applications—with still more being sent in—and needs donations from businesses, organizations and individuals to continue the program.

Tilly, who’s available for adoption, loves to be next to her humans, as well as taking hikes and leisurely strolls. She has great house manners, hangs out in her crate and rides calmly in the car. A smart girl, she knows the command “sit” and is working on others. Applications in advance are preferred and take priority over walk-ins. “We’re fortunate to have received the grant from the VFHS to provide these surgeries for nearly three dozen dogs,” said Chrissy Hamilton, ODHS founder. “Individuals who aren’t able to afford to have their dogs spayed and neutered can apply for a voucher to help pay the cost. ODHS wants to continue this invaluable program and is asking for donations from the community.”
