It’s nothing but snuggles, puppy kisses and a tail-wagging good time when Old Dominion Humane Society’s (ODHS) rescue dogs participate in community events in May. From hikes, strolls and yoga to a winery, farmer’s market and car shows, the rescues will take center stage as they seek their forever families.

Start the weekend with a Saturday Stroll, where the public meets at the ODHS doors at 7:45 a.m. Volunteers will match one of the smaller rescue dogs with individuals. The dogs will hitch a ride in participants’ cars, as they make their way in a caravan to a local trail. This activity is at a relaxed pace and gives the public a chance to meet the dogs available for adoption and provide them with social interaction and exercise.
One of the most popular events is the Sunday Hike, where the public is invited to walk the rescues, explore local trails and meet fellow dog lovers. Meet at the ODHS center at 7:45 a.m., and the volunteers will find the perfect four-legged friends to accompany participants, who will transport them in their cars. This is an ideal hike for the rescues, who need to “unleash” their energy.
Enjoy the spirits at Lake Anna Winery while meeting the cutest four-legged friends around. Guests might find the perfect pairing when they mingle with the selection of rescues, from puppies to adults to seniors. Visit the ODHS booth, participate in the run and find that “spirited” best friend. The event is at Lake Anna Winery, 5621 Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania Courthouse from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Find the freshest produce and the cutest rescue dogs while strolling through the FXBG Farmers Market. Make sure the grocery list includes picking up a cuddly, furry new friend, because the rescues will be there. The FXBG Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park is at 500 William Street in Fredericksburg from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Rev up the engines and hightail it to the Spotsy Spring Classic Car Show & Vendor Market, where guests can check out cars and canines. The event will include food trucks, raffles and family fun. Visit the ODHS booth, where the dogs will greet guests, provide free tail wags and accept pets. Come for the cars and take home a dog. The show is at 7100 Steckler Way in Fredericksburg from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Enjoy the sun and fun at the Jeep River Jam at the Dockside Restaurant & Tiki Bar in Colonial Beach, where a collection of jeeps and live music will make it a fun day. Don’t forget to bring along a bag of dog food as a donation for the ODHS rescues. The event is at 1787 Castlewood Drive in Colonial Beach from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Yoga classes are better with puppy cuddles, and this beginner class is the last one until the fall. The evening begins with the puppies from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by yoga moves like the “downward dog” from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The fee is $20 per participant and $35 for two (no need to preregister). All ages are welcome, so bring a friend or a child. ODHS is located at 3602 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. All proceeds from the event go to the care and comfort of the rescue dogs.
Grab some caffeine and watch the dog show, where they’ll strut their stuff to win prizes for the cutest outfit, best trick, best walk and biggest and smallest dogs. All proceeds go to the rescues at ODHS, and donations of martingale collars, leashes, blankets, towels, bleach and more are appreciated. The event is at 400 Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Join this beginner-friendly, low-impact yoga class for some exercise and the chance to get some puppy kisses. The cost is $28 per person, and 20 percent of the proceeds go to ODHS. The cost includes a gift bag and puppy playtime. Yoga is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and puppy cuddles are from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Awesome ‘Possumz is located at 211 William Street in Fredericksburg. Register at risingdawnyogastudio.com.
